Artist to Know: Joan Blond From Down Under
Joan Blond is one of my most favorite artists for so many reasons. Her artwork is brilliant and joyous and at the same time playful and unpretentious. Blond is an Australian artist who began making art late in her life.
She worked for many years in a legal office and raised a family before becoming an artist full time. But when her mother died, she remembered how much her mother enjoyed creating art and Blond decided to revive her own artistic practice as a way of dealing with her grief. She began painting for friends and neighbors experimenting with different styles and color palettes. Eventually, she began producing art that has her signature lush flora and fauna abstracts that have made her hugely popular with collectors around the world including me (I own an original 24x24 Joan Blond painting that I purchased in 2021).
A Sunset Trek; A Shimmering Woollahra Garden; Summer Cocktails in Bondi; Our Sunset Jog.
Joan Blond’s artwork has been featured in magazines such as Home Beautiful, House & Garden and Art Edit. She has also been featured on TV shows The Block and Interiors Addict.
Joan Blond has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Asia and Europe. Her work is also sold in several galleries and hotels and commercial installations.
Serpentine Soothing; Pearls on the Palm Beach; Prevelly Beach; Mother Earth Father Sky.
What I love the most about Joan Blond’s work is that it reminds me of a contemporary version of the aboriginal art that is traditional of the native people of Australia which dates back over 60,000 years and uses symbols and brush strokes in a rhythmic way to depict natural shapes and objects such as flowers and leaves.
